There are DJs that want to listen to music while other music is playing to the audience. E.g. to select new songs to be played.

software

  • Winamp (Windows) - Winamp#DJing_with_two_soundcards
    • you can specify where the output goes. Start two instances of Winamp, (maybe even safer against crash if you have two installs) and specify output
  • foobar2000 (Windows, Linux via Wine) - report received that under Windows you can start two instances and have different outputs set for them
  • MediaMonkey (Windows) - you can run two instances and select output
    • Tools | Options | General | uncheck "Allow just one instance of MediaMonkey"
  • Ubuntu Linux 8.10 and later, Fedora 9 and later, and probably most modern distros with pulseaudio
    • Use the Movie Player for the main playlist, and Rhythmbox to prelisten. Move one of the players onto the external soundcard using the pulseaudio volume control.
