reply to a request for notebook recomendation

I would have a look at something like

http://geizhals.at/eu/?fs=eeepc+1000h EUR 400 others are http://geizhals.at/eu/?fs=eeepc, but below 10 inch I would worry that software is good usable. Esp since 10 inch is going to stay and below will be phased out by Asus. I assume the larger the installed base the more support exists.

Or wait and buy one for USD 200 next year: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10080626-1.html

With solid state disk you are garantueed to have no hard drive crashs during DJing.

+ external soundcard : 1. avoids the issue that joerg noted? 2. gives more flexibility in case something is wrong with the laptop

I would probably choose XP over Linux, but if using Linux I would look for Ubuntu or Debian in that order. There is still some software (e.g. mp3tag) that only runs on Linux and I don't know how good the replacements are. But when, as you said, pure DJing and emailing is the only requirement, Linux should be enough.

If possibile I would like to have eSata, while USB 2.0 and SD card are absolute requirement.
