About Isolde Kanikani

Isolde is an international Tango teacher living in the Netherlands and doing regular tours to other countries. Working as a Tango teacher, Performer and DJ since she was 18. Teaching with various partners and collaborating with other tango proffessionals and artists on performance based projects using a wide variety of media. Until 4 years ago organising regular classes, workshops and small festivelitos in the UK. Now making regular classes in the Netherlands, while traveling and visiting other tango scenes.

Teaching Argentine Tango has taken Isolde to UK, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, France, Finland, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia, USA.

Over the last years she has been developing ways of teaching students to allow them to learn quickly the complex dance of Argentine Tango. Through the basic structures used in the regular classes, looking at the ways students can progress more efficiently, while being relaxed and having fun. A guide holding a safe space for students to enjoy learning and progressing, eventually developing their individuality in the dance.

Behind the scenes she has been developing a way of explaining the complicated movements of Tango, breaking them down into basic components, once learned will allow an individual dance an improvised musical dance that flows in its vocabulary. Of teaching structure for beginners, intermediate and advanced classes, laying foundations for fluidity in movement and musicality in the first lesson.

Isolde goes each year to Buenos Aires to continue learning, as well taking classes from other teachers when inspired. What ever ones level its so important to keep learning and updating as the Tango is continually evolving. The energy from inspiration is a wonderful thing, that she exudes when teaching her own students. Leading at a high level feeds her understanding of the dance and is very useful in the teaching and performing side of things, isolde has sometimes performed the man role with much laughter and delight.

'The traditional tango(as opposed to 'newer styles') music will always be my home, there is so much beauty and complexity in the music that I keep finding new delights in pieces of music I have heard over and over. I also find brief journeys into Nuevo and world music useful in both the teaching and dancing. It offers a different range of moods and musicality to tango music. Stretching the dancer and giving time to the student for learning a movement. But I will always come back to Tango loves like Biagi, D'Arienzo, Pugliese, Calo, Canaro and Di sarli. Not very faithful(smile), such a difficult thing with so much temptation.

I find other movement forms intriguing because they offer us a different perspective of the body to that which we learn in Tango, for me this brings a fuller understanding of the body and how to achieve the movements and posture for dancing. My explorations have lead me to discover (to various degrees) Flamenco, ballet, contemporary dance, kung fu (Shoalin long fist), tai chi and chi gong, shiatsu, and belly dancing. Many times there are overlaps in fundamental concepts within these ideologies, but understood in a completely different way.' - Isolde Kanikani
