Tango activities in Marseille are among the oldest ones in Europe, as the legend says that "tango arrived in Europe thanks to the Sarmiento boat (now a naval museum in Buenos Aires) in 1906". As everywhere, these activities were about to disappear until the beginning of 90's when a small group of tango afficionados created the non profit association "Les Trottoirs de Marseille" in 1993.

Since, many tango schools and associations - non profit assocations are the most common type of organisation for tango in France - have been created, the current list (September 2008) is more or less as follows (ordered by historical order of creation):

Despite this relatively high number of tango schools, some collective actions have been performed during these last years:

  • since June 2005: La Rue du Tango organizes a milonga on every Friday evening (20h-24h) in June and July, alternatively DJ'ed by each tango association of Marseille
  • October 2006: the event Marseille Heure Tango was co-organized by 4 tango associations.
