Since WIT can stand for Western Indonesia Time or Waktu Indonesia Timur (Eastern Indonesia Time) it may be useful to completely abandon "WIT" and to make use of Internationalized time point unique time zone abbreviations.

If heading for four letter acronyms then using

  • IDWT - Indonesia Western Time
  • IDCT - Indonesia Central Time
  • IDET - Indonesia Eastern Time

has the following benefits.

Benefits

Benefit 1

It would use the two letter country code as suggested for single zone countries in

ftp://ftp.iana.org/tz/code/Theory

"When a country has a single or principal time zone region, append `T' to the country's ISO code, e.g. `CVT' for Cape Verde Time."

Benefit 2

The code would be easier to understand to all people that know that ID is the ISO country code for Indonesia. A high percentage of people that will see the Indonesian codes will probably know exactly this, since it is also the ccTLD.

Benefit 3

If one day all of Indonesia uses one zone, then the change would be minimal, it would be IDT.

Benefit 4

It would already now better fit with codes from Asian and specifically ASEAN countries. The page http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbreviations/timezones/asia/ lists Asian zone acronyms and the following acronyms look to me as if they contain the country code. Six countries of the ASEAN region use the country code.
