The Sansa m250 is a low-cost solid-state digital music player.

Features

  • 2Gb of storage
  • MSC (UMS) and MTP modes, selectable by system config setting.
  • Playback supports 320kbps MP3
  • Four-line display

Advantages

  • Field-replaceable battery
  • MSC mode, interfacing the storage to the host PC as a standard lettered drive. (Uploaded tracks work but uploaded .M3U playlists though visible in the device UI do not in general work, often been shows has having "No files".)
  • In MTP mode, tracks may be seen, read and played on the host PC.
  • In MTP mode, playlists may be seen, read and edited on the host PC. (Editing is only through the file Properties dialog, and is confined to track reordering and deletion i.e. excludes addition.)

Limitations

  • The maximum number of playlists that can be created through the device UI is one. This list is called Favorites.
    • Favorites can hold a maximum of 30 tracks.
    • Favorites can hold only one instance of any track (obstructs curtains).
    • A track must be playing in order to be addable to Favorites (obstructs background queuing).
    • A playlist cannot be added to Favorites, though each of the tracks within a playlist can be added individually.
  • In MTP mode, playlists may not be copied to the host PC - they arrive as zero-length files.
  • In MSC mode, tracks/playlists uploaded in MTP mode cannot be seen from the host PC.
  • Unicode tag values are displayed as 'Unknown' (see DAP metadata display failure)

Problems

  • V4.1.07E Poor play transport quality e.g. clicks/bursts of junk upon play start and between tracks.
  • V4.1.07E Device fails to display any tag containing an accented character, possibly any non-ASCII character.
    • In the case of track title, the device displays the filename instead.

Usage

  • Syncing from MediaMonkey: Setup
  • Recovering from lock-up that can occur at end of sync: reset by removing battery for a few seconds.
  • Using the Favorites playlist: 1) Enable by setting Settings | Advanced to ON 2) Add the track that's playing by pressing and holding the centre button 3) Play the Favourites by sleceting Music | Favorites.
